ProMark Classic Forward 5A Hickory Drumstick — Oval Wood Tip
The stick most drummers mean when they say "5A."
The 5A is the default drumstick of the last fifty years, and the ProMark Classic Forward is the version a lot of players settle on. It is turned from select American hickory at the standard 5A dimensions — 16" long, .551" in diameter — with a short forward taper that moves the balance point toward the tip. Sold as a matched pair.
What "Forward" means.
The taper is the section where the shaft narrows into the neck and tip, and its length sets where the stick's weight sits. A short taper, like this one, leaves more mass out front: the stick hits harder for the same effort and feels more planted, at the cost of a little of the whippy rebound a long taper gives you. For rock, funk and most kit playing at volume, that trade is the right way round.
Construction:
- Select American hickory: the standard drumstick wood — dense enough to last, with enough natural flex to absorb shock so the shock does not go into your wrists.
- Oval wood tip: a broad contact patch that pulls a full, round tone out of a ride and a warm voice off the drums. Wood tips sound darker on cymbals than nylon.
- Short forward taper: forward-weighted balance for power and a solid feel.
- Matched pairs: ProMark sorts sticks by weight and pitch so the two in your hand behave the same.
