The Black Ice is D'Addario's oversized jazz-shape pick cut from Duralin at a full 1.5mm. It is a stiff, unforgiving pick in the best sense — almost none of the energy you put into the string gets lost flexing the plectrum, so every note comes out fast, defined and loud. This 10-pack is the sensible way to buy them, because the good ones always disappear into the couch.

A traditional jazz pick is small and sharply pointed, which gives great articulation but leaves some players without much to hold on to. Black Ice keeps the tapered point and the tight radius but enlarges the body, so you get pinpoint attack on single-note runs with a grip surface that still feels like a normal pick in the hand.

Construction:

• Duralin: the acetal resin (also sold as Delrin) that D'Addario builds its stiffest picks from — high strength, excellent dimensional stability, and it resists wearing down at the tip.
• Triple-tumbled finish: the picks are tumbled three times to raise a fine soft-touch texture across the face, which is what keeps them from sliding in sweaty hands under stage lights.
• 1.5mm extra-heavy gauge: effectively no flex, for a bright, immediate attack and a pronounced pick click against the string.
